Today, in this series on what I call Emotional Power and Freedom, I’m excited about sharing with you more about the benefits of embracing our vulnerability and expressing our emotions.

Last week we explored how important the connection is between expressing ourselves and our emotions, specifically how freeing our voice helps to free our emotions. Our voice is more than just the physical ability to speak. It’s a powerful tool for expressing ourselves, connecting with others, and releasing emotions that might otherwise stay bottled up inside. When we free our voice, we also free our emotions.

But I guess that you still feel like some of your emotions are trapped inside of you, waiting to be expressed but unable to find their way out? If so, you are not alone. The ability to express emotions and be vulnerable has become so important for everyone, especially with the physical shutdown and consequential emotional shutdown that most of us experienced in the past few years.

I know that many creative professionals and even leaders are struggling to find a way to release and process and use their emotions in a healthy and constructive manner.

We live in a world that values strength and resilience, often at the expense of vulnerability and emotional expression. We’ve been taught our whole lives to mute our feelings and be in control at the expense of cutting ourselves off from a full and rich emotional life. However, as creative professionals, we know that our work is deeply rooted in our emotional experiences and our ability to connect with others.

In order to truly thrive in our work and personal lives, it is essential that we embrace our vulnerability and emotional expression. And when we learn to express ourselves fully and authentically, we create a space where our emotions can be acknowledged, validated, released and powerfully used in our work.

So, it’s important to have a space, a community, or a platform where you can…

Take some time to explore your own voice and your full emotional range

Listen to and observe yourself and to others with curiosity and without judgment

Experiment with different forms of emotional expression to find what resonates

Allow yourself to be vulnerable and authentic in your life and creative work

Recognize that your voice and emotions are gifts that deserve to be shared with the world

Some of the benefits of emotional expression and vulnerability include:

Greater Emotional Intelligence

This is the ability to recognize and understand our own emotions and the emotions of others. You know how crucial this is to our work. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and express our emotions, we become more in tune with the emotions of others, so we can truly move our audience.

Improved Mental Health

So many of my clients have found that their personal life is much healthier as they find and empower their emotions and feelings in their work. Suppressing our emotions can take a toll on our mental health. When we allow ourselves to express our emotions, we release the pent-up tension and stress that comes with being a creative professional. It allows us to process our emotions in a healthy way, which can improve our mental well-being.

Increased Creativity

This is a big one! Emotional expression and vulnerability allow us to tap into our creativity in a way that is not possible when we are emotionally closed off. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we become more open to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This openness leads to greater creativity and more exciting work.

Stronger Connections with Our Audience

As creative professionals, our work is often a reflection of our own experiences and emotions. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and express our emotions, we authentically embody human emotions into our work and it becomes a universal truth that our audience can relate to. We are able to create art that speaks to people on a personal level, which can lead to greater impact and influence.

Increased Resilience

Emotional expression and vulnerability also make us more resilient. When we are able to express our emotions and be vulnerable, we become more comfortable with discomfort and uncertainty. This resilience allows us to bounce back from setbacks and challenges that are inevitable in our careers. It’s amazing how being real with our vulnerability makes us stronger.
