Finding our creative purpose becomes crucial in a world where creativity and self-expression are valued more than ever. It is an inner calling that drives us forward, providing our craft with a sense of satisfaction, fulfilment, and authenticity.

However, the journey to uncovering our creative purpose is not always easy. It is really easy to let our excuses show up when we are doing something that feels important to us. Especially for creatives who are just starting out, fear can get in the way. The journey to finding our creative purpose requires resilience and self-discovery to navigate the obstacles that come our way. We all go through it. So what can we do to get over that?

In this article, we will explore the significance of our individual creative purpose, the importance of maintaining a resilient mindset, and how this journey of self-discovery can lead to unlocking our true creative potential.

What Is A Creative Purpose?
About ten years ago, I officially created my coaching studio for creative professionals, “The Artist First”, and launched a website for my coaching services. My coaching is thriving today but some days I can still feel scared. I can go down the rabbit hole of perfectionism and nothing ever feels good enough. But that kind of self-sabotage doesn’t work on me for long because my creative purpose — my why — is bigger than my excuses.

Our creative purpose is the guiding force that compels us to create and express ourselves through our personal craft. Personally, I found a purpose in coaching, but for you, it could be being an entrepreneur, leader, or artist! It is a deep-rooted feeling that our art has a greater meaning and impact beyond personal satisfaction.

Finding our creative purpose involves understanding the “why” behind our artistic endeavors. Our why is the message we want to convey, the emotions we aim to elicit, and the impact we hope to make. By connecting with our creative purpose, we tap into a wellspring of inspiration and motivation that fuels our artistic journey.

When you dig into your “why”, you tap into an endless reservoir of creativity and innovation. It is more than a mission statement — it is a heartfelt narrative that resonates with you and your clients, your team, and your audience. Your “why” ignites the passion within you and those you touch, setting off a chain reaction of purpose-driven actions and meaningful outcomes.

How To Find Your “Why”
I began reflecting on the beginning of my journey into teaching and coaching and traced it back to about 30 years ago. Then I realized that the very first official job I ever had was teaching guitar at the local music store in Rockford, Illinois where I grew up. On my 16th birthday, I drove over to Nielson’s Music Store and asked them to hire me as a teacher. And they did! For those of you who know the band Cheap Trick, the music store was owned by the Father of Cheap Trick’s guitarist, Rick Nielson (Just a bit of trivia about my life and growing up!)

Now, I have been passionate about teaching and coaching people ever since. I saw how helping someone learn something could change them and even transform them. So when I officially launched The Artist First Studio, I wanted to have a clear “why” for doing this.

I asked myself these questions: What do I want my students to experience when I am coaching them? What is the experience of being creative like? What are the guiding principles that I want to build my coaching on? What is the creative experience I will invite my clients to have when working with me?

These are my answers:
Explore. The creative process is limitless and therefore, so is your creative purpose. You may be a performance artist at the present honing your craft, but you may also find purpose in sharing your craft through teaching. So do not put yourself in a box and explore your creativity.

Create. Being creative means bringing into existence something new. Finding your why requires action that will make your imagination real and tangible.

Live. Being in the present and indulging in your own creative journey is part of finding your why. This means embracing every aspect of your creative process with vigor and enthusiasm.

Laugh. Find joy in everything that you do — even in the face of a roadblock. This tells your subconscious that your craft gives you pleasure, which is helpful when finding inspiration. Some of our most creative ideas come when our minds are free and carefree.

Play. Lastly, keep playing. By this, I mean consistently engaging in your craft whether for enjoyment or improving your talent. Every time you “play” is a unique experience of its own and can inspire you to dig deep to find your “why”.

The process of self-discovery can involve experimentation, taking risks, and exploring different creative avenues. By stepping outside your comfort zone and trying new approaches, you can uncover hidden talents, discover alternative paths, and gain a broader understanding of your creative purpose.

The Journey To Finding Your Creative Purpose
Finding your creative purpose often requires embarking on a journey of self-discovery. It involves exploring your passions, strengths, values, and experiences that shape your unique artistic voice.

It can be helpful to seek inspiration from others who have embarked on a similar journey. Mentors, role models, and creative luminaries can provide guidance and perspective, helping you navigate the path towards your creative purpose.

This is where my role as a creative coach comes in your journey! I share my own experiences to help you find and reaffirm your “why”. I truly hope that my story serves as a reminder that the journey might be challenging, but ultimately rewarding.

Embracing Your Creative Purpose
Once you have gained clarity on your creative purpose, the next step is to fully embrace it without hesitation or self-doubt. This involves aligning your actions, goals, and decisions with the essence of your “why”. Embracing your creative purpose means letting go of external expectations, societal norms, and comparisons. It is about staying true to yourself and creating from an authentic place.

By unleashing your creative purpose, you not only tap into your true creative potential but also inspire others through your art. Our work becomes a reflection of our unique voice, resonating deeply with others who connect with our message and vision.
Once you find your “why”, the experience becomes transformative. It will enable you to make a meaningful impact and leave a lasting legacy through your art.

Powerfully Express. Connect Authentically. Grow Your Influence. Change Lives.
